Because they’re not gonna go and jam in a few hundred qualifier games right before the world cup because all the players playing in the world cup play in their own professional teams (ex; barcelona, ac milan, real madrid, liverpool). So they spread the qualifying games out over 2 years so that those players can play both international and professional soccer.
Because with football (soccer) it is done during the season, which for most internationals involves around 60 games for there club teams. You have the league the cup (2 cups in England) and european games. Therefore there is little time for WC qualifiers, so they squeeze them in where they can.
Because the games are so spaced apart that it takes 2 years to finish them all. There are a lot of teams in the groups and they have to play each other twice (double round robin). At the same time, the footballers are very busy with the club competitions that in Europe there is a two week break between club matches when a qualifer is played.
each world cup qualifier has its region (africa, europe, south america, etc) and its takes hundreds of countries to qualify, so it will take over a span of a few years. good news: it already started, rejoice !
I think it is to give the players teams coachs time to prepare. If there are injuries they will have plenty of time to recover, if there are problems there is time to solve them.
a few reasons. players have their own comitments with their clubs. fifa has 208 countries and they all cant participate. rosters are not tied up during qualifiers so they have time to try out other players.
